Video: Two shopkeepers were attacked with knives in robberies less than two miles apart.

Both were stabbed in raids in Brighton on last night and this morning.

A man and a woman were arrested as police investigated whether the crimes were carried out by a single gang.

Shopkeeper Sam Suchak was attacked at Park Road Newsagents in Park Road, Coldean, at about 6.40am yesterday.

He said a hooded man walked into the shop and grabbed his arm while brandishing a knife.

The blade cut Mr Suchak above his eye.

He said: “Blood came out.

“I wasn't scared. I pushed the panic button.”

When the shop's alarm sounded the robber fled.

Police arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.

Sussex Police said they were keeping an open mind over whether the raid was linked to a robbery at Happy Shopper in Upper Bevendean Avenue at 4.50pm on Tuesday.

Shop assistant Kesavan Subramaniam, 23, was stabbed in the chest as he struggled with a hooded man with a scarf over his face.

He had tried to resist but opened the till for the attacker after he was injured.

The man snatched about £500 and fled with a woman who had walked into the shop during the robbery.

They ran off towards Manton Road and an alleyway leading to Meadowview.

The man was black, light-skinned, 5ft 8in, stocky, with a black eye.

The woman was white, 5ft 6in, freckly, with ginger hair tied back in a ponytail.

Mr Subramaniam needed treatment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital for his stab wound.

He told The Argus: “It was shocking.

“I am angry.”

A 32-year-old woman was arrested in Brighton yesterday morning on suspicion of robbing the shop. She was later released without charge.
