A politician stormed out of a meeting after a rival issued a public reminder for colleagues to watch their language around the issue of travellers.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s cabinet member for communities Ben Duncan made the comments in front of representatives from Sussex Police, elected members and residents.

Coun Duncan urged everyone “especially the councillor members who really should know better” to “bear in mind their responsibility” when talking about travellers.

Conservative councillor Tony Janio said he felt as though he was being told he could not talk about the issue and vowed not to return to the community safety forum until he received an apology.

It comes after Sussex Police confirmed they are investigating a series of racist remarks and death threats made to council staff and travellers.
