Fewer women in Brighton and Hove are seeking help to cope with rising debts than men.

As fuel, food and living costs soar more men are now taking up debt counselling, a survey shows.

Of the 1,637 people seen by the charity Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) in the city last year only 47% were women.

However, women in Brighton are running up lower debts on average than men.

Last year women in the city who sought help owed an average of £18,734 on credit cards, loans and other debts.

At the same time the average debt for men in Brighton and Hove seeking help was £22,574.

The figure is repeated in the rest of Sussex and bucks the national trend which last year saw more women seeking help than men.

Of the 4,368 people seen by CCCS in the county only 48% were women with an average debt of £18,973.
