A petition will be presented to councillors calling for them to reject proposals to locate a new travellers' site in Newhaven.

Lewes District Council is currently consulting on locating a temporary travellers' site in Denton Corner.

But many Newhaven residents are opposed with 80 people attending a recent meeting objecting to it.

They passed a petition to Newhaven Town Council who promised to hand it to Lewes District Council.

A Newhaven Town Council statement said: “The petition contained more than 1,000 signatures from local residents and business leaders, opposed to the proposed site in Newhaven.

“The town council accepted this and offered to make two additional copies to pass on to Lewes District Council and East Sussex County Council at their upcoming meetings.

“Comments from the public ranged from road safety and suitability of the locations, to the ability of public services to cope.

“The town council stated its position as a consultee and not the planning authority, which will be responsible for making the final decision.”

A Lewes District Council spokeswoman said:”

"Lewes District Council will accept any petition presented to us at the next council meeting scheduled for December.

“If residents want to make their views known to us about the core strategy document they can do so by emailing ldf@lewes.gov.uk or writing to us at Southover House, Southover Rd, Lewes, BN7 1AB by the closing date of November 11."
