An 80-year-old woman was killed in a crash after the car she was travelling in collided with a lorry.

The pensioner, from Robertsbridge, bear Hastings, was travelling in a grey Skoda when the crash took place on the A2100 London Road, Mountfield, Rother, on Sunday just after 5.30pm.

A 79-year-old man, from Robertsbridge, who was driving the Skoda, was taken to the Conquest Hospital in St Leonards suffering from serious internal injuries.

The HGV lorry is believed to have been performing a U-turn when the Skoda, which was travelling south, collided with the offside of its trailer.

Sergeant Mike Dunne, from Polegate Road Policing Unit, said: “This is a very tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased woman and the injured driver

“If you witnessed the collision or saw the Skoda car and HGV lorry prior to the incident please call Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Belford.”

A 57-year-old man, from Wales, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been bailed until February 12 pending further inquiries.
