A man has appeared in court charged with the murdering an 11-month-old baby girl.

Unemployed Jerome Edwards, 27, is alleged to have killed Crystal Hall-Hummel at an address in Nursery Lane, Worthing, on Friday May 13.

Edwards was arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday morning by detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team who have been investigating the death.

Crystal, of Christchurch Road, Worthing, died in St Thomas's Hospital, London, on May 14. She had been transferred there from Worthing Hospital the previous day.

Paramedics were called to Nursery Lane at 9.56am on May 13 and resuscitated the Crystal after she stopped breathing.

A post-mortem examination carried out by a Home Office pathologist and a specialist paediatric pathologist gave a provisional cause of Crystal's death as head injury.

Further detailed and expert analysis by doctors specialising in infant head injury established that her death was caused by internal head injuries, Sussex Police said.

Edwards, of Bridgefield Close, Midhurst, appeared at Worthing Magistrates' Court this morning.

He was remanded in custody and will appear at Hove Crown Court tomorrow.
