1 - From Pevensey and Westham station entrance, turn right and, at a mini roundabout, right again along High Street and first left along Peelings Lane. After about 300 yards, turn right into the entrance drive to Castle Farm, walk through the farmyard and forward over a stile beside a gate.

Follow a track to a second gate and maintain direction across a field, over a low rise and down to a stile in the field corner. Continue to a footbridge and a stiled crossing of the A259 Pevensey bypass.

Now head very slightly right across the drained pasture land of Hankham Level. Cross four fields with gaps between them to reach a substantial bridge over Pevensey Haven.

2 - For the shorter walk, turn right just short of the bridge, picking up the route description when the longer walk returns to this point. For the full walk, go ahead across the bridge, half-left across the next field to another bridge, in sight, and on across a field to a third bridge.

Now bear half-right across a field, heading for the buildings at Chilley Farm. Go through a gate and bear right along a drive passing a farm shop (refreshments available) to join a lane and turn left.

3 - After about 150 yards, where the lane bends right, fork left along a dirt track, through a gate and ahead with a drainage ditch on your left beside two fields. Cross a footbridge and continue with the ditch on your right, following it until you can join a lane over a stile on your right. Turn left.

After about 300 yards, at a road junction, turn left, signed to Hankham and after a few yards, go left through an iron gate to the right of a farm gate, signed as the 1066 Country Walk which you will be following to Pevensey Castle, well-trodden and signed.

Enclosed at first, then along a right field-edge, it then joins Pevensey Haven on your left, which you can follow closely for over a mile.

Back at point 2, cross your outgoing route, continue beside Pevensey Levels at first, then dog-leg right and left to enter an enclosed path which takes you back over the Pevensey bypass and on to join Pevensey High Street. Turn left.

4 - Shortly, turn right into the Castle grounds through an arch in the outer 4th-century Roman wall and follow a tarmac path, passing, on your left, the Norman Keep, open at weekends in winter, daily from April 1. Leave the Castle area, go ahead along a road to rejoin and follow High Street, soon back on your outgoing route, which you can follow back to the start.
