Owners of a historic venue are hoping a refurbishment will turn around its fortunes.
The former Hanbury Ballroom, in St George’s Road, Brighton was taken over by the Proud Group almost two years ago.
But the firm, which runs a variety of events in London, has admitted unless it increases capacity of the former mausoleum it will continue to lose money.
It has now proposed revamping the Grade II listed venue, now known as the Brighton Ballroom, to increase capacity in the hope this will turn it into a long-term sustainable business.
A planning application has been submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council to simplify the interior and remove the existing bar.
In its place will be two small balconies and new bar and DJ areas.
The application, which is being overseen by Hove-based POD Planning, said: “The premises were taken on by the Proud Group in 2010 following a number of different former operators going bankrupt.
“The Proud Group have invested significant time and resources into improving and marketing the venue, however, the venue continues to operate at a loss which cannot be sustained in the long-term.”
It adds: “The proposals will provide a simpler symmetrical internal layout and enhance the internal space of this unique grade II listed building ensuring the long-term sustainability of this venue.”
There are no changes to the external appearance The local authority is currently consulting neighbours and a decision is due to be taken by February 17.
