A £250 million development at Brighton Marina could start by the end of the year.

Brunswick Developments was granted permission for its proposals for 853 flats and almost 2,000 square metres of shops and leisure space in the south-west corner of the marina five years ago.

Now, as it submits revised plans to solve some parking issues, those behind the development have said work could start in a matter of months.

Andrew Goodall, of Brunswick Developments, said: “We have got a live planning application but within that we are moving some of the car parking around.

“If everything goes through planning as we hope then the earliest we could start is at the end of this year, possibly the start of next.”

Developers were given planning permission in July 2006.

Initial clearing work did start but the first phase was put on hold due to falling property prices, a lack of credit and the difficult economic situation.

Plans for the site, which currently houses a cinema, a McDonald’s restaurant and a David Lloyd gym, include the 40-storey Roaring Forties building, which would be the tallest in Sussex.

A revised planning application to Brighton and Hove City Council has been submitted this week. This would see the lower two levels of parking under the main development scrapped. These would be relocated in three additional basement car parking levels.

Road layouts would remain unchanged as would the number of car parking spaces.

Brighton and Hove City Council expects to make a decision on the Brunswick Development plans next month.
