City streets are among the five worst accident blackspots in the country.
Brighton and Hove has been rated fourth outside London for road crashes – with drivers 80% more likely to be in an accident than elsewhere in the country.
The A259 seafront road, A23 London Road, North Street and Edward Street are being highlighted as the streets with the worst rates of crashes.
The figures are based on Department for Transport statistics for 2010.
In West Sussex, there were 1,814 accidents, with a rate of 3.7 per thousand cars.
In East Sussex, there were 2,225 crashes, with a rate of 4.2 per thousand cars.
Fatal
But in Brighton and Hove, there were 902 crashes, with a rate of 8.5 crashes per thousand cars.
Of those crashes, seven were fatal and 123 involved serious injury.
Brighton and Hove City Council said it uses crash figures to identify blackspots and the type of people involved in accidents.
It said that last year collisions had fallen by 15% and casualties by 14%.
The council’s Ian Davey, cabinet member for transport and public realm, said: “We’ve laid out our vision for a city where residents, businesses and visitors can get around efficiently and safely.
“We will invest in road safety schemes, public transport, and access to jobs and businesses among other areas.
"We’re also prioritising much-needed improvements to road and pavement surfaces, streetlights and the seafront arches.
“Modern infrastructure is essential to keep the city moving, and makes it a better place to live, work and visit.”
Ashley Peters, of insurers Staveley Head, who carried out the research, said: “The results for Brighton and Hove are worrying – more should be done to ensure motorists in the city remain safe on the roads, particularly when travelling along the A23, which is a notorious accident blackspot.”
