A £140 million plan to build more than 500 flats, and convert two listed buildings into an entertainment complex has been revealed.

Lewes District Council has received two applications from Oakdene Homes to build on land around the marina and near the train station in Newhaven.

The plans are part of ongoing development in the town around the estuary.

The marina development, called phase three, is for 334 residential flats split into ten blocks at the marina along Fort Road.

The blocks will be between four and nine storeys high and will contain 80 onebedroom apartments, 190 two-bedroom flats and 64 three-bedroom flats.

The development also includes a marina office and club room, workshops, cafe or bar and shops.

Architects Morgan Carn have designed both developments.

Partner John McLean said: "I am tremendously excited to have submitted planning applications for the next two phases of riverside regeneration at Newhaven.

"Phase three is the mixed redevelopment of the whole marina to include greatly improved new moorings and facilities for berth holders, along with boat and car parking.

"Public access to the waterfront is currently restricted and the proposals include a central square surrounded by a cafe and restaurant."

Phase four of the plan, at Railway Quay, is for 188 flats, split into three blocks of between three and eight storeys high and an additional seven threebedroom town houses.

The entertainment complex, which includes a bar, restaurant, art gallery, shops, nightclub, gym and hotel, will be housed in two former railway sheds.

The plan also includes a 273-space car park.

Councillor David Rogers said: "I think it is good there seems to be growing interest in Newhaven and this follows on from what we heard a fortnight ago about the potential investment in the port."

Oakdene Homes is currently building 111 apartments at Newhaven Marina along Fort Road as part of phase two of the marina development.
