The Stranglers were one of the foremost pop-punk bands of the late-Seventies and early-Eighties.

Lead singer Hugh Cornwell was the driving force behind most of their many hits but in 1990 left the band to go solo.

At Wednesday night's gig he entertained a predominantly middle-aged male crowd with a selection of songs from throughout his career.

But it was the Stranglers' hits they came for and hits are what they got, albeit begrudgingly.

When audience members started calling out requests, Cornwell grizzled, "You'll get what you're given."

But their enthusiasm wasn't to be dented, even when he ticked them off for smoking. Very rock 'n' roll.

He started the set with Duchess and treated fans to other favourites, including Always The Sun, Heroes and a psychedelic Walk On By.

Cornwell proved to still have the presence, skills and passion which made The Stranglers a great band.

Hearing him play live served as a reminder of how influential his music has been for many of today's guitar bands.
