A planning committee will probably decide tomorrow whether to allow the Grade I-listed Brighton Dome to be used as a giant advertising hoarding.

The proposals are for festooning the building with giant Ds for Dome, and black signs and banners.

The Dome is second only in terms of historical and architectural importance to the Royal Pavilion itself.

In fact it is older than the Pavilion, dating from the early 1800s, and is listed twice, both for its exterior and its interior.

The Dome was designed by William Porden, who also designed Mrs Fitzherbert’s house in the Steine.

The signs would dominate the building to such an extent that they would overpower it.

Would anyone consider large Ps, and black signs and banners on the Pavilion?

If not, why would they be acceptable on the Dome?
