It is difficult to comprehend SD Gover’s claim that the Bible “has been the guiding bulwark of these islands for almost 2,000 years” (Letters, September 15).
In fact, the “Holy Book”, as he calls it, was unknown in these islands for many centuries.
The first full translation of the Bible into English was accomplished in the 14th century. The King James version was published in 1611, and illiteracy was the norm for at least another 150 years.
SD Gover is incorrect when asserting that placing one’s hand on the Bible is a requirement in a court of law – that has not been compulsory since the Oaths Act of 1888.
Perjurers have hoodwinked juries by swearing on the Bible.
Magistrates and judges have browbeaten those exercising their legal right to affirm.
In 21st-century Britain, the oath should be replaced by an appropriate form of affirmation.
