Apparently, nobody told this swan that the bridge he crash-landed on was closed.

The helpless bird trapped itself between security fencing that had been put up for maintenance work on Shoreham footbridge on Tuesday, September 18.

Rescuers put their climbing shoes on and scaled the 7ft fences to set him free.

Trevor Weeks, from Uckfield, drove 40 minutes to the scene in Shoreham to lend a hand.

He said: “As the bridge was closed, we had to scale the fences by climbing on concrete pillars and bridge railings. I ripped my trousers in the process. I’m clearly not as young as I used to be.”

After a successful descent, Mr Weeks was able to corner the swan and capture it. With help from his partner Kathy Martyn, the pair managed to safely release it back into the river.
