Members of the public left flowers at a police station in tribute to two PCs murdered in Manchester.

Sussex Police flew flags at half-mast at its stations across the county as a mark of respect yesterday.

PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone were killed in a gun and grenade attack after answering a routine burglary call on Tuesday (September 18).

Yesterday (September 20) flowers were left at Brighton Police Station in John Street. Staff tied them to the flagpole outside.

Sussex chief constable Martin Richards said: “I am touched by this lovely gesture from the public.

"It is heart warming to know that many people besides police officers have been affected by this tragic incident.

“The sad news of the death of the two officers as they answered a routine call is a stark reminder of the potential danger that our frontline officers and staff face every time they are on duty.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these officers and with our colleagues in Greater Manchester Police at this tragic time.”
