Memberships of the newly formed Brighton Handball Club has rocketed thanks to the enthusiasm of Argus readers.

The team, which formed following the success of the sport at the Olympics , is now on the verge of signing a sponsorship deal to ensure they can play competitively.

We featured the group last week after their first training session at the Moulsecoomb Community Leisure Centre on September 12.

Following the article, organisers were inundated with emails and 13 players turned up on Wednesday night for their second session.

The Argus also arranged for Team GB star Mark Hawkins to pay a visit to share some sporting tips.

Juan Reig, who set up the team, said: “The response has been fantastic. I’ve had about 35 emails from people wanting to play and there were plenty of new faces at training on Wednesday.

“Mark was brilliant. He helped us out with training and we spoke to him about his experience at the Olympic Games.”

In last week’s article Mr Reig also pleaded with local businesses to come forward to help with the cost of equipment and kits.

Just days later he had received a call from a prominent recruitment firm who are now in talks over potential sponsorship.

Mr Hawkins, who starred in Team GB’s Olympic campaign, made the journey from Horsham to help out at Wednesday’s session.

He said: “It was really good fun and great to see so many people down there. We always knew that handball would take off in the UK and it just needed that high profile event to showcase it.”

The Argus featured the team as part of Our Olympic Legacy Campaign.
