More than 200 people marched through Brighton to campaign for animal rights.

The National March for Farmed Animals began at The Level on Saturday and wound its way through the city centre to Madeira Drive.

It is thought there were approximately 250 people taking part in the march. There were no arrests.

The organisers worked closely with Sussex Police while planning the march so that appropriate policing could be put in place, freeing up officers to monitor other events in the city.

The force later issued a statement thanking the demonstrators for their co-operation.

Chief Inspector Jim Bartlett said: “It was a great example of how Sussex Police and protest organisers canwork together to facilitate a peaceful event and keep disruption to the community to a minimum.

“The organisers have engaged with Sussex Police’s Protest Liaison Officers (PLOs) throughout the planning process and also throughout the day.

“Everyone has the democratic right to protest and PLOs work to facilitate peaceful protest and provide a safe environment for the protesters and those going about their everyday business.”
