A COMMUNITY fridge will be launched at Brighton's Open Market to tackle waste and food poverty.
The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership will host the initiative, organised by Sainsbury's and the fridge is set to open in the spring.
Local producers, retailers and residents will be able share surplus food and everyone will be able to help themselves to quality food that would otherwise be wasted.
A second site is currently being finalised and will be announced in the coming weeks.
The fridge will be open from 7am – 7pm Monday to Friday, 7am – 5pm on Saturday, and 10am – 5pm on Sunday.
Vic Borrill, director of the Food Partnership, said: “Community fridges are a tried and tested way of stopping good food ending up in the bin.
"While the fridges are not a solution to food waste, they are a wonderful way to connect people and ensure good food goes to good use”
