A KNIFEMAN has been arrested after refusing to come out of his home for police for more than seven hours.

Emergency services were called to a man who was armed with a knife and refusing to leave his property in Battle Road, St Leonards at 9.37am on Sunday.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue were called to the address following a report of a fire.

An occupant refused to let firefighters in and was still inside the property.

Police attempted to negotiate with the man and part of Battle Road with the junction of Upper Glen Road was closed.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "The fire was put out and police officers entered the property at 4.40pm and arrested the man for a number of offences.

"He is currently being treated for a minor injury."
