Multi-lingual Varndean students learned up to six different languages in one day as part of the school’s High Impact Day.

The school became a veritable Tower of Babel as students greeted each other in modern languages from all corners of the globe.

Year 7 students passed through a carousel of languages during the day that included Romanian, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Czech, Polish, Russian and German.

Mr Brian Somers, who organised the event and is also head of modern languages, said: “The aim of the day is to dispel some of the myths around language learning and for students to deepen their appreciation and understanding of other languages, and for them to have some fun doing it.”

Students took part in taster sessions with staff from Varndean School and visiting tutors from Varndean College.

A recent survey of staff at Varndean showed what a talented crew they are – with 18 different languages available to choose from.

The day ended with a plenary session in the hall that saw each tutor group perform something in one of the languages that they had learned during the day.
