BRIGHTON and Hove District Schools’ Under-14s needed extra time to see off Maidstone in the first round of The Eagles Cup.

The Sussex outfit – known as Brighton Boys – travelled to Maplesden Noakes School on November 29 and scored twice in extra time to win 3-1.

The game started with both sides having equal amount of possession but little in the way of clear chances.

Maidstone looked strong down the right flank and Brighton's left back Ashley Wadhams was in for a difficult game.

Good link-up play between James Waters and Josh Gould created a chance for Nick Whitley-Jones but his shot went past the post.

Moments later Waters then saw his chance go over the bar. A couple of Brighton substitutions just before half time proved the turning point with replacement Lewis Abberley scoring from a corner on the stroke of half time.

The second half was one-way traffic with Maidstone laying siege on Brighton's defence, who remained resolute. Keeper Vinnie Burdon pulled off three great saves to keep Brighton in the lead and although the away team were able to counter attack a couple of times, they could not find the finishing touch to double their lead.

Brighton made use of the rolling subs with the clock winding down, but slack defending for the first time in the half allowed a cross to come in and it sailed untouched into the far corner of the net for Maidstone's equaliser.

The referee blew his whistle at the restart as the teams headed to extra time deadlocked.

Brighton changed tactics and pushed players forward, but the first half of extra time remained 1-1 with Maidstone hitting the bar with an effort from distance.

In the second period of overtime, Harrison Faulkner was put clean through and a composed finish through the keeper’s legs put Brighton back into the lead. Then a free-kick struck sweetly from a wide angle by Lewis Abberley put the game out of Maidstone's reach.
