Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn took time out from a tumultuous day of Brexit activity to join a delegation of MPs and Peers celebrating the Prince of Wales’ 70th birthday.

Charles welcomed the group from across the political spectrum to Clarence House and received a portfolio containing a humble address from each of the Houses of Parliament.

The presentation came after a string of ministerial resignations and calls for Mrs May to be ousted as Prime Minister in a backlash over her Brexit plan.

The address from the Commons sent a message to the prince “to offer His Royal Highness the warmest good wishes of the House upon the occasion of his 70th birthday, expressing the gratitude of the nation for his lifetime of service to the country and the Commonwealth and praying that His Royal Highness may long continue in health and happiness”.

MPs debated the message on Wednesday and made their own tributes to the heir to the throne, who celebrated his birthday with a Buckingham Palace party hosted by the Queen that evening.

Peers followed a similar procedure.
