Albion boss Gus Poyet has told The Argus his bid to sign Dutch prospect Virgil van Dijk "is over".
The Seagulls have had two bids knocked back for the rising Groningen star.
Poyet needs a centre-back to help cover the current absence of Gordon Greer and Lewis Dunk.
He will assess his options before tomorrow night's transfer deadline.
But he said: "At the moment there's nothing. It's going to be very difficult."
