Scotland legend Willie Miller has backed Gordon Greer to get the nod for one of the biggest tests of his career.

The Albion skipper is hot favourite to start the Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland in Warsaw tonight (7.45pm) after Blackburn defender Grant Hanley withdrew with a knee injury.

Miller is convinced Greer’s experience will help him back into the side in central defence alongside Brighton-born Russell Martin.

Scotland face a massive test against a Polish side buzzing from their 2-0 win over world champions Germany on Saturday.

Boss Gordon Strachan has tended to select Greer ahead of the other candidates, Christophe Berra (Ipswich) and Mark Reynolds (Aberdeen), so far in his 18-month tenure.

Miller, capped 65 times in defence by Scotland, said last night: “Mark Reynolds has been in outstanding form but I don’t think he will get the shout “I think Gordon Greer would be the one Gordon (Strachan) would rely on.

“He played in the last game in Poland alongside Martin. I think Gordon will go for that partnership, that experience.” If Greer gets the nod it will be his first competitive cap but a chance to renew his promising partnership with Norwich defender Martin.

The duo helped keen clean sheets in both their games together last season, including a 1-0 win in Poland in a friendly in March.

Strachan was giving no hints as to will fill in for Hanley when he addressed media in Warsaw last night.

But the Scottish media are convinced Greer will get the nod.

Scotland keeper David Marshall said: “Grant will be a huge miss. But we’ll take confidence from the last result we had here and confidence from the last 18 months under the manager.”

Poland’s attack will be led by Robert Lewandowski, who missed the defeat by Scotland seven months ago with a knee injury.

The win in Warsaw was one of three clean sheets in which Greer featured before earning his fourth cap, and his second alongside Hanley, in a 2-2 draw with Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Aaron Hughes should earn his 93rd cap for Northern Ireland as the early Group F leaders face their toughest test of the campaign yet in Greece (7.45pm).

The Albion centre-back admits it is a key game and said: “If we can go there and get something we are also taking points of them.”

Jake Forster-Caskey is expected to start in central midfield as England under-21s defend their 2-1 first leg lead over Croatia in a play-off to reach next summer’s Euro finals (5pm).

Young Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton helped England under-20s secure top spot in a challenging four-team tournament in Holland last night, although they missed out on a 100% record.

Walton made his second appearance of the event in the 1-1 draw with Turkey which followed impressive wins over Germany and the hosts.
