Boss John Gregory was satisfied with a point after Crawley’s 1-1 draw at Gillingham.
Gwion Edwards fired Reds into a deserved lead after 29 minutes but Leon Legge equalised two minutes before the interval.
Gillingham dominated the second half with Legge and Bradley Dack both going close to scoring a winner.
Gregory said: “That was probably our best away performance in the first 45 minutes but we really needed to get that second goal to make things a bit more comfortable.
“To then concede a goal right before half-time was a killer blow.
“They made a change at half-time and put somebody on Keith Keane which stopped us playing a little bit and we had to battle in the second half.
“We were hanging on a bit at the end but we were very resolute. It was a hard earned point and after the result on Tuesday (1-0 win against Walsall) it was important to pick up something here.”
