Nigel Clough believes Albion are “hoping” Chris O’Grady can remain with Sheffield United for the rest of the season.

But he admits he understands why the Seagulls are keeping options open with their out-of-favour striker.

O’Grady aims to make the second appearance of his loan spell, which runs until January 31, when United visit Fleetwood on Saturday.

Both O’Grady and Blades boss Clough have previously hinted they would like to see the loan extended.

Now Clough has revealed he believes Albion would be willing for the striker to stay at Bramall Lane for the rest of the season if all goes well.

Clough said: “We’d have done exactly the same in Brighton’s situation. Leave all the options open.

“There’s not many clubs who would commit at this stage until the end of the season and they’ve got a 24-hour recall after 28 days.

“But I think all parties are hoping it goes smoothly and that he’s with us until the summer.”

Albion’s attacking options are improved by the return from suspension of Adrian Colunga as they prepare to host Millwall in a televised six-pointer tomorrow night.

The Lions, who were also interested in taking O’Grady on loan, have lost winger Lee Martin to a toe injury. Martyn Woolford is expected to deputise.
