Adam Chicksen has vowed to prove he is the player to end Albion’s left-back problem.

The Seagulls have relied on loan signings in the position for three seasons in succession.

Chicksen wants to change that by building on his recall from a stint at Gillingham in place of Aston Villa’s Joe Bennett in Friday’s 1-0 home defeat by Millwall.

It was only his fourth Championship start since signing from MK Dons in July 2013 on a three-year contract.

Albion borrowed Wayne Bridge from Manchester City to fill the left-back role in 2012-13. Stephen Ward occupied the spot on loan from Wolves last season and Bennett has dominated since his arrival from Villa.

Chicksen, 23, told The Argus: “I signed for the club to push for first choice in this spot. If I didn’t believe I was good enough I wouldn’t be here.

“I signed to come and play and I want to hold down that position and prove that I can play every week at a level that is going to take this team higher.”

Chicksen is reluctant to go out on loan again once the transfer window reopens in January.

“I want to be playing in this team and I’ll give everything to play,” he said. “Now I’ve got a chance at the moment I want to try to keep my place.

“All I can do is train really hard and show every day how much I want to play. Hopefully then I’ll stay in the team.”

Albion have a loan headache again for Saturday’s trip to Wolves.

Sami Hyypia recalled Chicksen a day early from his spell at Gillingham to omit Bennett and comply with the regulation allowing only five loan players in the matchday squad.

Greg Halford, Gary Gardner, Joao Teixeira, Darren Bent and Elliott Bennett all started the Millwall game.
