Gordon Greer has been urged to target a trip to Euro 2016 – by maintaining his current form and fitness with Albion.

The Seagulls skipper returns to club action against Norwich City on Friday after another successful week away with Scotland.

His national team assistant manager Mark McGhee will be at the Amex and will have a close eye on both Greer and fellow Scotland centre-back Russell Martin, who will start for the Canaries.

McGhee believes national duty has spin-off benefits for Greer’s club form.

And he admits he is impressed by the 34-year-old’s enduring levels of fitness.

The former Albion manager told The Argus: “There’s an awful lot of work to do between now and possibly getting to the finals in France next summer and we realise that “But, should we be fortunate enough to get there, I would think the group of 16 or so who got us there would be shown loyalty, providing they are fit and healthy.

“Gordon has come into the international game late in his career and I think we appreciate that, at some time, fitness could become a factor.

“But I see him play a lot and he keeps playing at the same level.

“He is consistent and, when we are looking for a partner for Russell or someone else at the back, we keep coming back to him.

“His record in terms of helping us keep clean sheets is impressive. Even the goal we lost against Gibraltar came before he was on the pitch.”

Greer earned his seventh cap as a half-time substitute against Gibraltar having played the full 90 minutes in last Wednesday’s 1-0 friendly win over Northern Ireland.

He has been a regular in Gordon Strachan’s squads over the past 18 months.

McGhee added: “From Brighton’s point of view, I think what international football has done for Gordon is give him more confidence, being involved regularly at that level.”

Brighton boy Martin scored a spectacular goal for the Canaries when they drew 3-3 with Albion at Carrow Road in November.

But his defensive abilities are more likely to be to the fore as he tries to end the Seagulls’ impressive recent home run of ten points from their last four games.

McGhee said: “Both Gordon and Russell are top professionals who are a real asset to the group.

“As a manager and coach, they are both brilliant to work with.”
