Albion ended their season with a suitably forgettable stalemate at Middlesbrough.
But they could have grabbed a win at the Riverside.
The Seagulls produced a compact, disciplined display against hosts deflated by their near miss on automatic promotion.
But they squandered the best chance of the game when Chris O’Grady sent Greg Halford’s cross over the bar from close range in the second half.
Christian Walton, brought in for his third league appearance in goal, made a couple of saves.
He got down to his right to deny Albert Adomah in the first half.
Then he was reprieved by a Kike mis-hit in the second period and managed the divert the Spaniard’s gently bobbling shot to safety.
Youth team forward James Tilley got on very briefly at the end for his senior debut.
