Bas Savage insisted today he should not be regarded as Albion's goalscoring saviour.

Savage's second-half double in Saturday's 2-0 win at Northampton took his tally to six goals in 11 games since his free transfer move from Gillingham at the beginning of February.

But the modest striker puts the Seagulls' rise from relegation trouble to mid-table security down to a team effort.

He said: "Everything has just clicked. When I first came in Alex Revell was out injured and the manager said they were missing a big man so that they could put balls in the box.

"I have just fitted in nicely. The lads have worked hard, the defence has been magnificent and everyone is pulling together."

Referee Darren Deadman stood close by and watched as Savage celebrated his first goal with his trademark moonwalk in front of Albion's 1,300-strong travelling army.

Savage revealed: "The ref was cheeky. He actually told me the goal was offside, which put me off for a split second.

"I wasn't worried at all that he was going to book me. The ref has got to see the funny side in a situation like that and he did."

Captain Dean Hammond missed Albion's first win for six matches with a hamstring injury and could now have surgery on the double hernia he has been playing with since before Christmas.

Manager Dean Wilkins said: "If the medical staff say he is going to be out for four weeks then we will get the operation done now."

Meanwhile, Arsenal defender Joe O'Ceaurill's third month on-loan to Albion has been cut short by ankle trouble.

Is Bas the long-term answer to Albion search for a goalscorer?
