Sussex coach Mark Robinson has been named as the new head coach of the England women’s team.

Robinson is believed to have got the nod ahead of former Sussex skipper Chris Adams for the post and will be unveiled at a press conference at Lord's today.

The 48-year-old is held in high esteem by the ECB having led two successful Lions tours and came close to getting the England men’s job in 2014 only to miss out to former Hove colleague Peter Moores.

The ECB were keen to appoint a coach with experience at the highest level in the wake of England’s defeat in the Ashes last summer.

Robinson fits the bill having won every domestic trophy during his ten years in charge of Sussex, including two County Championship titles.

Robinson said: "I’m obviously hugely excited about my new opportunity, but it goes hand in hand with a lot of sadness too. To leave a job I enjoy, a club I love and so many people I respect and admire is going to be a wrench.

"There are so many people I need to thank in the next few weeks who have made my time at the club since 1997 a special one. The club and the supporters will always have a special place in my heart and I wish the club stability and every success for the future.”

Chief executive Zac Toumazi had hinted there may be changes in the coaching structure at Hove following relegation from division one last season and has confirmed that Mark Davis will stepping up to become head coach.

Davis has been part of the coaching set-up at Hove since bringing his playing career at Sussex to an end in 2005, initially as second team coach before becoming Robinson’s assistant in 2012.

The South African born 44-year-old has built a good reputation and narrowly missed out on job of coaching Sri Lanka in 2013.

Davis said: "I’m very excited and honoured to be taking over as the new head coach at Sussex and continuing the work that Peter Moores initially began, and that Mark Robinson continued so brilliantly. I’d like to thank Mark for everything and wish him well for his future role.

"We will be working hard to continue with the values that Sussex stands for and to ensure that the county competes at the forefront of English cricket.

"We have a fantastic squad which has a good mix of youth and experience and we have some exciting challenges ahead. I am looking forward to working alongside our new captain Luke Wright."
