Albion assistant Colin Calderwood wants to be a No. 1 again.

But he has vowed not to abandon Chris Hughton for a second time.

Calderwood was in charge of Northampton, Nottingham Forest and Hibernian before linking back up with Hughton as his Albion No.2 in February. He also worked alongside him at Newcastle, Birmingham and Norwich.

The 50-year-old Scot left Hughton’s Newcastle to become Hibernian boss and, although keen on another crack at management, says he would not make the same mistake again.

Calderwood said: “My ambition would be to have another go. I’ve got no reservations saying that.

“Chris would probably understand but I wouldn’t leave him again like I did once before. That was the wrong decision at that time but going forward at some time I would like to try that slippery rope.”

Hughton, Calderwood and coach Nathan Jones have steered Albion to second in the Championship with a club record 17-match unbeaten league run stretching back to the end of last season. The top six are separated by six points ahead of Sunday’s trip to third-placed Burnley and Calderwood expects numerous clubs to be in contention for promotion in 2016.

He said: “I think any team within ten points of sixth place will still be in with a chance of something towards the end of the season.

“It can get taken away quite quickly and you’ve got to maintain a huge amount of consistency in terms of taking points from games to be up there challenging. Any team in the league are capable of winning two or three in a row and that makes a massive difference.”
