Charlie Oatway is being offered the chance to complete his marathon road back from a broken ankle.

The name of the club captain is on a list of 11 out-of-contract players being offered new deals by the club.

He is joined by Guy Butters, Michel Kuipers, Paul Reid, Alexis Bertin, Adam Hinshelwood, Gary Hart, Kerry Mayo, Doug Loft, Sam Rents and Wes Fogden.

Of those, Hinshelwood and Reid are likely to be fully operational for the new season after missing much of last term through injury.

Young Wes Fogden is being given a chance to prove himself after recovering from a tumour in his back, which struck shortly after he signed his professional contract.

Details of the contracts on offer are being kept under wraps but Albion could opt to tailor Oatway's proposed deal to match his recovery from the injury he suffered on Boxing Day 2005.

Albion boss Dean Wilkins said: "Charlie's case is slightly different to the other players.

"He has been out for a long time but his progress in the last few weeks has been good.

"He is feeling optimistic about things.

"He is in rehab now. I've seen him running and he looks better than he has at any time since his injury.

"With him, it's like learning to climb stairs. Every step is a new challenge.

"His is not a common injury and you are never sure about how it will go when he makes the next step but we are optimistic."

Albion's retained list is largely along the lines of what was widely expected.

Arguably the most surprising name is that of Doug Loft, given he struggled to make much impact in his few first-team chances. The former Hastings player did well in an impressive reserve side, however, and was praised for his attitude by Wilkins.
