East Grinstead men have missed out on becoming the first ever English club to win a medal at the top level of European indoor hockey.
However, it has still been a historic weekend for the Sussex club at the EuroHockey Indoor Club Champions Cup.
Grinstead lost 4-1 to Swedish side Partille in a play-off for the bronze medal.
Captain Simon Faulkner reduced the deficit to 2-1 with five minutes remaining but Partille bagged two late goals to add some gloss to their victory.
Before this weekend East Grinstead, who were representing England in Europe for a seventh year in succession, had never reached the semi-finals before.
That changed when they qualified from pool B.
Having drawn both their games on Friday, Grinstead reached the last four when Ross Stott scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 defeat of Spanish outfit Complutense on Saturday morning, Faulkner adding the other.
After losing a shootout with Arminen to determine the group winners, after both finished with identical records, Grinstead were paired in the semi-final with hosts and holders Harvestehuder who proved too strong for the reigning English champions, reaching the final with a 4-0 victory.
