Andrew Whing revealed today that he snubbed promoted Blackpool to rejoin Albion.

Persistent interest from the Seagulls since his loan spell was cut short in December has persuaded the Coventry right-back to return on a permanent basis.

Whing, 22, is back on a free transfer for two years from July 1 once his contract with Coventry expires.

Albion have fought off competition for his signature from League One rivals and Blackpool, promoted to the Championship via the play-offs.

"That just all broke down and I couldn't wait on them," said Birmingham-born Whing, who passed a medical yesterday after returning from a holiday to America on Wednesday.

"Since I left Brighton on loan Dean Wilkins (manager) and Dean White (assistant) kept in contact. They have showed great interest in me.

"I feel I can talk to them and it is a big thing for me to have a manager and staff who want me. That was the big reason.

"I didn't have to agonise, even though it's a big decision. I am moving a long way from home and it is my first real move."

Whing, 22, impressed when he was on loan last season from October to December. He helped Albion into play-off contention with eight wins in 15 appearances before Coventry recalled him.

Wilkins said: "We're really pleased to have finally secured Andy for next season. He was involved in our most successful period last season and we're looking forward to continuing that relationship in the future.

"We were keeping an eye on the situation from the moment he went back to Coventry. I'm sure that not only myself and the staff but the players as well will be pleased to see Andy back on the training ground in July."

Chairman Dick Knight, currently in Portugal for the Football League's annual conference, said: "That's a good piece of business done. We've been tracking Andy since his impressive loan spell here last season.

"We had a £60,000 offer for him turned down by Coventry in January and we've faced fierce competition from a Championship club and a host of League One clubs for his signature now.

"Following extensive negotiations we were able to tie-up the deal with Andy's representative.

"Apart from his loan spell with us, Andy has played all his career at Championship level and he could have chosen to stay there.

"He's decided instead to sign for Brighton permanently. Albion fans will be as pleased as I am that this quality player is coming back to the club."
