THIS IS the moment Maty Ryan was caught in No Man’s Land for his country – and earned criticism from a predecessor.
Albion’s record signing was lobbed by Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa as Australia went behind against Cameroon right on half-time.
Former Socceroos keeper Mark Schwarzer said Ryan was ill-advised to come out of goal after the ball was played through.
He said: “They want to play a higher line and Maty Ryan is trying to sweep in behind.
“He has got to realise he’s not going to make that interception.
“He makes up the mind of the striker for him. He has zero chance of making a save.”
Australia fought back for a 1-1 draw but look to be heading out of the Confederations Cup.
Schwarzer also questioned Ryan’s positioning when a deep cross came in.
The former Middlesbrough and Chelsea keeper said: “His initial position is really deep on his goal line.
“He is making his mind up that he can’t come to get that cross.
“He needs to take up a more aggressive stance.”
Albion target Aaron Mooy played the full 90 minutes for the Aussies.
