West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez faces an FA investigation into remarks made to Albion defender Gaetan Bong during today's 2-0 defeat for the Seagulls at the Hawthorns.

Bong immediately reported the second half incident to referee Martin Atkinson, who then spoke to the fourth official.

Replays showed Rodriguez holding his nose, as if to suggest Bong smells, but it was unclear what was said.

Albion boss Chris Hughton revealed: "Gaetan Bong has reported Jay Rodriguez for something that has been said to him. It's been handled in the correct manner by the referee. The referee is aware of what the allegations are and that will go through to the FA."

Hughton refused to confirm whether the allegations are of a racial nature: He said: "I am aware of the allegations. All I can say is it was dealt with in the correct manner and yes there are allegations made against Jay Rodriguez but the nature of that the FA will deal with."

West Brom boss Alan Pardew said: "There's been an allegation made by the Brighton full-back to the referee and that allegation will go to the FA. I can only say on my behalf, because I haven't seen the incident, knowing Jay Rodriguez I find it very difficult to understand if I'm honest.

"Jay Rodriguez claims that the allegation, what ever the allegation is, is untrue."

Pardew, asked if it was of a racist nature said: "I have no idea at this stage."

The flashpoint overshadowed West Brom's first Premier League win in 21 games which has dropped Albion to 15th, still three points above the relegation zone.
