Albion are in talks with Sunderland over the departure of Kazenga LuaLua.
The Argus understands the out-of-favour winger's exit would be on a permanent basis rather than another loan.
LuaLua's second loan in as many seasons with Queens Park Rangers was cut short in December.
Rangers manager Ian Holloway said: "He lost his father and I think he lost his confidence."
Long-serving LuaLua could now return to the north-east, where he began his career with Newcastle.
The 27-year-old, out of contract at the end of the season, has scored 22 goals in 183 appearances for Albion since signing from Newcastle, initially on loan, eight years ago.
LuaLua has not played for the Seagulls since a red card in the Football League Trophy in December 2016.
