Sussex have called up teenager Will Sheffield for their opening fixture after suffering another bowling setback.

The 17-year-old academy left-arm swing-bowler impressed on the pre-season tour to Cape Town and comes into a 13-man party in place of Abi Sakande.

Sussex are already missing George Garton as they head to Birmingham today for the Championship opener at Warwickshire, which starts tomorrow.

Sakande reported some soreness in his left side following the friendly against Surrey on Tuesday and remains at Hove as a precaution.

Spinner Danny Briggs also misses out as he recovers from a knee injury sustained over the winter.

Both Garton and Briggs are expected to play in next week’s 2nd XI matches against Essex at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove.

Sussex head coach Jason Gillespie said: “We’re looking forward to the challenge of playing Warwickshire on their home ground.

“We’re very confident going into this fixture, knowing we’ve made the most of our preparation.

“It’s now up to us to go out there and nail our skills and enjoy the challenge with smiles on our faces.”

Sussex squad: Ben Brown, Will Beer, Michael Burgess, Harry Finch, Ollie Robinson, Phil Salt, Ishant Sharma, Will Sheffield, Stiaan van Zyl, Stuart Whittingham, David Wiese, Luke Wells, Luke Wright.
