Jason Gillespie says he is “gutted” for Will Beer after the spinner suffered an injury setback.
Beer misses the home Championship opener against Gloucestershire, from tomorrow, due to soreness in his side.
Danny Briggs comes into the squad after proving his match fitness with outings for the 2nd XI.
Beer reported soreness after bowling 26 overs in the draw against Leicestershire.
The leg-spinner will receive further assessment in the coming days.
Tomorrow’s game comes too soon for fast bowlers Abi Sakande and George Garton.
Gillespie said: “We are gutted for Will. At the moment he is a bit sore and we were concerned about him being able to get through the game.
“Danny comes into the squad and we will have a look at it in the morning.”
Rain is forecast for Hove at times over the four days.
Sussex could opt for an all-seam attack and bring Stu Whittingham back into the XI after he missed out at Grace Road.
Players not involved will turn out for their club sides in the county league’s T20 competition this weekend.
