Century-maker Tom Haines has thanked his mum for getting him to the crease on time.
The 19-year-old Sussex batsman was rushed to Arundel this morning to replace Chris Jordan and responded by scoring 124 against Durham.
Both Haines and Phil Salt (130) made maiden Championship centuries as the county reached 439-5 on day one.
Haines had been due to play for the second team at New Malden until Jordan was called in by England Lions.
He said: “I got my mum (Rachel) to pick me up from there and drive me down to Arundel.
“I got there at about 9.25am so it was a bit of a rush.
“It was an early pick-up for her but it was very much appreciated and I’m so glad she and my dad (Mark) were there to see it.
“I put in so much hard work in the winter, in the indoor school and in South Africa, so I’m absolutely chuffed.”
