Sussex were bowled out for 552 shortly before lunch on the second morning of their Specsavers County Championship Division Two match against Durham at Arundel.

The visitors were 5-1 at lunch.

Sussex resumed on 439-5 and Durham were encouraged when Chris Rushworth took two wickets with successive deliveries in the third over of the day. First Ben Brown, who had added just two to his overnight 50, aimed to strike the ball over midwicket but only succeeded in skying to the keeper. Then David Wiese was lbw to a pitched-up delivery.

Jofra Archer was eighth out at 500 when he miscued to extra-cover for 17.

But Michael Burgess maintained Sussex’s advantage with some well struck drives and hit Rushworth for three boundaries in an over.

He had resumed on 30 and when he reached 91 he became the county’s leading scorer in Championship matches. But he was caught at backward-point four runs short of his century and without addition Ollie Robinson was bowled by Graham Clarke.

Sussex broke through in the third over when Tom Latham fended a rising ball from Archer to Harry Finch at slip.
