Sussex continued to chip away at Durham in their Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash at Arundel.

Durham lost their second opener, Cameron Steel, at 43, when the batsman cut Danny Briggs to Jofra Archer at point for 20.

It was not Steel’s most memorable day because earlier he had been removed from the attack after being no-balled for his second delivery above waist height.

With both openers gone Durham’s target to avoid the follow-on – 403 – looked a long way away but Will Smith and Graham Clark found the pitch benign once the change bowlers came on.

So it was a surprise when Clark, attempting to pull a delivery from Luke Wells, had his off stump knocked back by the bowler to make it 96-3 in the 36th over.

New batsman Paul Collingwood was immediately surprised by one that bounced from Briggs but he and Smith survived until tea, when Smith was 46 not out.
