Durham lost their last six wickets for just nine runs in 10.5 overs this morning and were asked to follow on 341 runs behind Sussex.

At lunch they were 56-1 in their second innings.

Durham resumed on 202-4 with the overnight pair of Will Smith (90) and Gareth Harte (12) still hoping to avoid the follow-on. Sussex, meanwhile, were looking forward to taking the new ball six overs into the morning session.

But the new ball was not needed as the Durham innings subsided in just 43 minutes.

Danny Briggs took the key wicket of Smith – lbw sweeping - with the fifth ball of the day.

David Wiese then wrecked the innings with three wickets in seven deliveries. He bowled Stuart Poynter, who was back when he should have been forward, and then bowled Josh Coughlin, shouldering arms, first ball. When he had Nathan Rimmington caught down the leg-side in his next over four wickets had tumbled for one run.

Briggs then had Harte caught behind. Harte had scored one run in half an hour as he watched the mayhem unfold. Finally, Wiese bowled Matt Salisbury for eight.

When Durham batted again Cameron Steel, shouldering arms, was bowled by a fine nip-backer from Jofra Archer.
