Albion have added a dash of samba to their squad by completing the capture of versatile Brazilian defender Bernardo Fernandes da Silva Junior from RB Leipzig.

The 23-year-old has signed from the Bundesliga club for an undisclosed fee, believed to be close to £9 million, on a contract until 2022.

Bernardo, primarily known as a full-back, can also play in the centre of defence or as a defensive midfielder.

Albion have previously added Nigerian World Cup central defender Leon Balogun to their options at the back this summer following the exits of Connor Goldson, Uwe Huenemeier and Liam Rosenior.

Boss Chris Hughton said of Bernardo: "He is a strong, committed defender who can play on the left or right and so his versatility gives us good options at the back.

"For a young player he already has good experience, having played in the Bundesliga, the Champions League and the Europa League.

"He is a good character and speaks numerous languages, and I'm sure he will fit in well with the rest of the squad."

Bernardo, born in Sao Paulo, played in Brazil for Audax and Red Bull Brasil before moving to Europe two years ago to play for Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

He has made 49 appearances for Leipzig in the Bundesliga, Champions League and Europa League over the past two seasons.

His father played for Brazil and Bayern Munich.
