Albion are weighing up whether to hold on to hot prospect Viktor Gyokeres or loan him out to further his development.

The 20-year-old Swedish attacker came off the bench to score the only goal in yesterday’s friendly behind closed doors in Nice which saw record buy Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Florin Andone make their first appearances.

Gyokeres, prolific for the promoted under-23s last season, has impressed manager Chris Hughton during his pre-season involvement with the first team.

He pounced yesterday in the second half from the bench after £17 million Iran winger Jahanbakhsh and Romanian striker Andone played the opening 45 minutes.

Hughton said of Gyokeres, bought from Brommapojkarna last September and initially loaned back to them as they were promoted to the Swedish top flight as champions, said: “We’ve been delighted with him.

“He in effect has been with us all pre-season. He has given us flexibility.

“He is a centre-forward. He can play up front and in wide areas as well.

“You can tell he is a young player that has played senior football.

“There is a nice physicality about him, which is needed. He has been very good for us.

“At the moment we are just assessing it.

“He has definitely done himself no harm. He has been good in the group.

“We will make an assessment for his development.

“If we want him around us that will be his development, if we feel he will benefit from going on loan then that will be his development.

“At this moment we are to make up our minds on that one.”

Albion would not have to name Gyokeres in their 25-man Premier League squad to be able to use him, as he is under-21.

The same applies to central defender Ben White, who has also been used throughout pre-season. He replaced Shane Duffy for the second half yesterday, with Lewis Dunk left at home to rest after already playing plenty of minutes in the warm-up programme which concludes against Nantes at the Amex on Friday night (7.45pm).
