Phil Salt fired 108 runs in a session to put Sussex well on top at Hove today.

The opener scored his second Championship century of the season as he and Luke Wells punished a depleted Derbyshire attack with a run-a-ball opening partnership of 191.

Sussex were in search of rapid pre-declaration runs after gaining a first innings lead of 51 on the third morning and Salt led the charge, reaching his hundred from just 87 deliveries, with nine fours and five sixes.

Salt, 22 next week, scored his maiden hundred against Durham at Arundel in May.

And he was even more destructive against a Derbyshire attack without Ravi Rampaul, who had left the field on Sunday with breathing difficulties.

In a single over from New Zealand international fast bowler Lockie Ferguson he drove the fast bowler back over his head for four to raise the Sussex 50 before striking two sixes, one over square-leg and out of the ground into the adjoining flats and another top-edge over the third-man boundary.

Wells was no slouch, striking ten fours in a 102-ball 78.

At tea Sussex were 216-1 – 267 ahead - with Salt unbeaten on 119.
