Sussex are making progress towards another Championship win at Hove.

They took two Derbyshire wickets in as many overs today after the visitors made a solid start to their epic fourth innings pursuit of 405 to win.

The visitors also saw Ben Slater, who looked in good touch, depart injured just before lunch, which they reached on 77-2.

They are batting without the unwell Ravi Rampaul so, if Slater - who had made 40 - cannot return, Sussex would need just six more wickets for the win which would boost their push for promotion.

Sussex had to wait 67 minutes for a breakthrough today. The worn pitch was still playing well and opening batsmen Billy Godleman and Slater suggested that survival was possible.

Slater square-drove David Wiese to raise the 50 in the 15th over of the morning, after an hour’s play. And it was something of a surprise when Wiese, in his next over, plucked Godleman’s leg stump out of the ground.

In the next over Chris Jordan, in the middle of an impressive spell from the Cromwell Road End, had Wayne Madsen lbw with one that nipped back into the batsman.
