Laurie Evans believes he is playing as well as ever.

Now he wants to take that form all the way to another T20 finals day.

Evans, Sharks’ top run scorer in the competition, will be one of their voices of experience in tonight’s Vitality Blast quarter-final at Durham (6.30pm).

He has scored 491 runs in 11 innings at an average of 70.14 and strike rate of 139 so far this season, with five 50s topped by his 96 against Somerset.

Evans has embraced a new role at No.3 but Sussex’s momentum, with three wins in four nights last week to reach the last eight, brings back memories of his success with Birmingham Bears in 2014.

He told The Argus: “We have been playing knockout cricket for the last three games.

“Each game, we have been turning up with must-win pressure and it was good to see some really good performances.

“Dizz (coach Jason Gillespie), Wrighty (skipper Luke Wright) and Danny (Briggs, vice captain) were brilliant keeping everybody calm and not building everybody up.

“When it was must-win, it focussed the mind if you like.

“That bodes well for the quarter-final.

“It’s always nice to sneak in and win an away fixture because all the pressure is on them.”

Evans has been highly dependable for Sussex – but Gillespie always knew, from experience, what he can do in the shortest format.

He said: “The year we won it at Warwickshire, I had a very good season.

“I got maybe four or five matchwinning performances during the group stage.

“I won us a game against Dizz at Yorkshire.

“It was a huge crowd and we needed to win and go through.

“They got 170 or 180 and we were something like 60-4 in the eighth over and I managed to be not out at the end.

“Then I got man of the match in the final, which was really satisfying “But this has been my most consistent season and I have loved every minute batting at three.

“I am constantly thanking Wrighty and Dizz for that opportunity.

“Dizz just said it was a natural thing he saw.

“I have usually been the guy who goes in around the middle and the field is out so you get yourself in and then explode at the end.

“They have said I can do exactly the same at three but the field is up so it has been nice to get some boundaries away when the ball is hard and not feel like you have to hit it in the air to get a boundary.

“That’s nice and I’ve ridden my luck and just batted for the team and the situation.

“There have been times when we have lost wickets and that makes your job different to when you get off to a flyer.

“I think staying in the present all the time and just batting for the situation has served me well.”

Evans was on 12th man duty this week as Sussex continued their push for promotion in the Championship.

He would love to get involved in the longer format and has told Gillespie as much.

He said: “The form I’m in, I feel like I’m playing as well as I’ve ever done.

“I’ve said to Dizzy how much I want to get back into the four-day stuff “But they have got some guys scoring runs so it’s a good place to be from the squad point of view.”

Sussex are showing tonight’s match in the Long Room at Hove.

Lancashire are through to Finals Day after beating Kent with eight balls to spare in a low-scoring tussle at Canterbury.
